Welcome

Welcome to the Modern Hebrew Program at Yale University. We offer classes on elementary, intermediate, and advanced Modern Hebrew as well as courses on biblical and medieval Hebrew, Modern Israeli literature, film, and contemporary Israeli culture. In addition, we offer Hebrew tables and directed readings. Communication in small classes is an important feature of the program as our goal is to enable students to understand, speak, read and write Hebrew at all levels. In all of the courses the students are exposed to poetry, short stories, media, music and movies and in the advanced levels we include novels and academic texts.

Online Placement Process

All students who have not yet studied Modern Hebrew at Yale (except for those who have no or only minimal previous formal or informal exposure to Hebrew) are expected to go through the Program placement exam.

The placement process ensures that students enroll in the course that most fit their needs, abilities and goals.

The Hebrew Program will follow the March 15-29 spring placement exam period and also offer placement exams by arrangement at other times. For any questions please email Dr. Shiri Goren, Director of the Hebrew Program, at shiri.goren@yale.edu.

If you have no formal or informal background in Hebrew, but consider shopping our classes, you do not need to go through the placement process. Instead, just come to one of our L1 classes at 10:30AM or 11:35AM.
